Quarantine Site
from US to Canada
For the past 10 years, we have been an authorized quarantine site for both llamas and alpacas traveling from the US to Canada.
The next quarantine is scheduled to begin September 1, 2007. Call for reservations.
Are you sending your llamas and/or alpacas to Canada? Let us do the work for you!
Since Canada opened its borders for the importation of llamas and alpacas in 1997, we have been an approved site for the Quarantines required. Back then, it was a six-month long quarantine process with two TB tests required. Canada has continued to streamline the process and it is now 30 days of isolation in the United States plus some testing. New Horizons Llamas has enjoyed being a part of this process of getting llamas and alpacas into Canada for ten years. Over these years, it has been our pleasure working with old and new owners and getting their animals home.
The process of working with the United States Dept of Agriculture and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is fraught with many potential problems. We are happy we are able to say that our experience and our relationship with the USDA veterinarians has enabled us to smooth the way for the importers. While it has not been part of our requirement to dialog with the Canadian vets and agencies, we have done it when necessary. We have stayed on top of all changes in the protocol. As the USDA vet said to Marilynn “you know the changes before I do”!
Communication with our Canadian importers/clients has been an important part of our service. When something happens, we let you know about it. We love getting to know your animals---and you!

Quarantine FacilityOne of the requirements of the Canadian protocol is an inspection of our Quarantine facility prior to the beginning of each Isolation period. We have worked with the USDA office for many years and have a great working relationship. The protocol is set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and we are careful to abide by their rules. The primary requirement is the separation of Quarantine animals from our llama herd by a distance of 30 feet. We are happy to provide themore... |
Births and Cria in Isolation Birthing? Cria care? New Horizons Llamas has birthed more than 100 cria—many of them in Isolation. Several herds of llamas and alpacas have entered the United States from South America; crossed the country and entered into Quarantine at our ranch. A few of those herds actually spent more than one year at our location. During their time here, we delivered many cria. Our yearsmore... |
