Camelid Quarantine Site
from US to Canada
For the past 11 years, we have been an authorized quarantine site for both llamas and alpacas traveling from the US to Canada.
The Quarantine following the Celebrity Sale has begun. Anticipated departure for those lamas will be about May 20, 2008.
We did bring home several llamas from the Cascade Llama Sale. It was great seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The next Quarantine will begin about May 23rd. There is still room for males and females in that Quarantine. Those animals will depart for Canada o/a June 27th. Please call or email if you would like an alpaca or llama in that Quarantine. The next regularly-scheduled Quarantine will begin after the Walkabout.
We’ll see you at the Hinterland Walkabout VI on July 25 & 26, 2008! It may be possible for us to haul any llamas purchased there or make your own hauling arrangements. Check with us there. We anticipate the beginning of that Quarantine to be about August 1st. If you have lamas at other locations you would like to come through this Quarantine, please contact us for reservations. Space for breeding-age males is limited. For more information on Walkabout VI, go to http://www.hinterlandllamas.com
We are finding that many folks do not understand the rule concerning the test for TB. It is a simple one: TB tests CANNOT be administered any more frequently than 90 days! If you have an animal who had a TB test in order to enter a sale, the next TB test can be no sooner than 90 days later. Obviously, that will delay that animal's entry to a Quarantine. About two weeks into a Quarantine, we will administer the TB test required for admission into Canada. The next TB test will be 90 days later, in Canadian Quarantine. This timing is a requirement of the Canadian protocol. Both American and Canadian veterinarians are adamant about the 90-day rule because they feel there is a likelihood of a false positive. Even though we may all be confident the positive is a false one, nevertheless, it shuts down the entire Quarantine as that animal cannot be tested for another 90 days. No animal may leave the Quarantine until that animal tests negative. If you have any questions at all about this rule, feel free to call us to discuss it.
Quarantines will normally be run to accommodate purchasers at the major sales. It is possible to have other Quarantines at other times of the year. Please contact us for more information.
Are you sending your llamas and/or alpacas to Canada? Let us do the work for you!
Since Canada opened its borders for the importation of llamas and alpacas in 1997, we have been an approved site for the Quarantines required. Back then, it was a six-month long quarantine process with two TB tests required. Canada has continued to streamline the process and it is now 30 days of isolation in the United States plus some testing. New Horizons Llamas has enjoyed being a part of this process of getting llamas and alpacas into Canada for ten years. Over these years, it has been our pleasure working with old and new owners and getting their animals home.
The process of working with the United States Dept of Agriculture and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is fraught with many potential problems. We are happy we are able to say that our experience and our relationship with the USDA veterinarians has enabled us to smooth the way for the importers. While it has not been part of our requirement to dialog with the Canadian vets and agencies, we have done it when necessary. We have stayed on top of all changes in the protocol. As the USDA vet said to Marilynn "you know the changes before I do"!
Communication with our Canadian importers/clients has been an important part of our service. When something happens, we let you know about it. We love getting to know your animals---and you!

Canadian Quarantine Requirements While we recommend that all importers into Canada check with their own CFIA veterinarian, we can make a few recommendations based upon our experience. Quarantine FacilityOne of the requirements of the Canadian protocol is an inspection of our Quarantine facility prior to the beginning of each Isolation period. We have worked with the USDA office for many years and have a great working relationship. The protocol is set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and we are careful to abide by their rules. The primary requirement is the separation of Quarantine animals from our llama herd by a distance of 30 feet. We are happy to provide themore... |
Births and Cria in Isolation Birthing? Cria care? New Horizons Llamas has birthed more than 100 cria - many of them in Isolation. Several herds of llamas and alpacas have entered the United States from South America; crossed the country and entered into Quarantine at our ranch. A few of those herds actually spent more than one year at our location. During their time here, we delivered many cria. Our yearsmore... |
